Sorry to read that your Nain died, Ellen. What a gift she gave you in sharing her memories with you. And your writing about her here is so evocative. Another really beautiful piece.
Thank you so much for your kind words Wendy! I’m sorry to hear about your loss, too. Looking forward to reading your piece — my Nain was a Yorkshire girl who moved to North Wales, so imagine there may be similar echoes in their childhood memories!
And vice versa, Ellen! My mum (b1930, died 2021, two months after my dad) was from Birkenhead, and evacuated to Wales (Newtown) during the war. Fortunately, she was with good people and had fond memories of Wales. Then back to Merseyside, and ended up in Yorkshire after she married my dad!
I’ve written pieces about her (and her parents!) and expect I’ll be writing more about her, too. It’s great to be able to share family memories and history here. (As well as anything else you fancy!)
And I just realised she was born the same year as my dad. He died in 2021. I included some of his South Yorkshire childhood memories in my piece about playing out, last but one.
Thank you for sharing this. I hope we hear more. Beautiful
That’s so kind of you to say!

This is beautiful, Ellen. I didn't know about your Nain's newsletter -- what a gift.
Lots of love 💕
